The overall goal of the research is to produce a clinical instrument that would be used at the point-of-care to provide an estimate of an individual's fragility fracture probability based upon the material characteristics of bone. The first steps to towards this have been successfully achieved; relevant material properties have been identified and we have demonstrated ex vivo quantification of these properties. Further, an output from our previous EPSRC project was an initial design for a clinical instrument based upon these findings. The next steps, as embodied within this proposal, will be to exploit our previous work and produce a pre-prototype scanner testbed which can be used to optimise parameters and assess measurement accuracies.
